This is my first-ever Amazon book review (really!). But I feel so strongly about this book, the information contained within, and the reassuring manner with which Jennifer Niederst takes the Web design newbie by the hand and shows them everything they need to know to build a really great first Web site, that I had to tell the world.
I make my living as a Web site editor and page designer. I've been doing this work for almost 10 years now, and I dig it. But when I was going to school and learning the ropes there was no single volume of collected skills, applications, and tips that one needed to master to get their head in the game and launch their first site. So I had to had to read a dozen thick, complex (and often boring) how-to manuals that instructors and other designers recommended to me.
The Third Edition of Learning Web Design cuts straight to the heart of the information canon and explores the coding skills, layout techniques, and visual graphics tools used to develop a really good-looking and functional first Web site. Now I'm not saying you won't need to read a lot more books and further pursue the techniques discussed in this book - that has always been the nature of Web design work. But this is a near-perfect overview for anyone who wants to get started creating a modern Web site or is considering a career in this line of work. Thank you, Jennifer!

I was actually quite terrified of web design before reading this book. It really changed my mind completely. It is easy to follow with full colored pages and the author puts some real personality into teaching web design. The tutorials are to the point and they don't drag on into boredom at all. It is especially good for those of us that are making the transition from print design to web.
I absolutely love this book and I actually feel like I have accomplished a lot just by reading it. I understand a lot about XHTML and CSS and I am ready to take my learning further. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to explore web design, especially if you want to do it correctly! You will not learn any poor techniques in this reading.
Do not pay attention to some of the negative reviews. Obviously you will not be an expert web designer after completing this book. That is not the point. Maybe the words "Learning" and "beginner" mentioned in the title were not specific enough to lead some people to the understanding that this book doesn't feature every single bit of code in existence for a reason! However, it does show readers enough material to confidently build great looking webpages with minimal and simple markup!
Over all, this book is exactly what the title claims to be. A starting point and a great one at that!

I wanted a book to show me how to design and build a website, and this book is exactly what I was looking for. With the hands on approach of the exercises and the quizzes at the end of each chapter, it felt almost like I was in a classroom. I tried to learn HTML and the like via online websites, but after reading this book, it seems like I was spinning my wheels before. Now, I feel like I have a good foundation to explore xHTML and CSS more in depth. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get started in web designing. The topics are well thought out and understandable. The excises reinforce topics covered, and the sidebar information and additional links allows further investigation into certain aspects of web designs. Enjoy!

"I buy this book as an introduction to web design, I wanted to learn HTML, CSS, and a well-rounded knowledge about the subject. And the book provides that, plus a solid base of what is a good and accessible web site, setting your mind in a neat and professional style with good practices.
It has a lot of references to find help, knowledge and resources in the web. It is very easy to follow, and it presents good examples and practice exercises.
It is not an advanced book, but when you finish it, you will be ready to do many things and continue to learn by your own with the resources it mentions.
For me it was a solid start point."
